Concept
The PlayBlock is about sustainable modularity. Keeping in mind the social importance of the public bench, the PlayBlock answers the questions about playful form, social context, mass production and ease of construction.
strategy
We took the primitive geometry of the cube, and began to subtract simple forms to seat our audience: the adult, the child, the plant, and the book. This strategy resulted in a desired playful nature, further enhanced by the multiplication of the block to create our desired bench. The seat serves as both a planter (to respond to environmental sustainability) depending on the orientation of the block. The book storage was of key interest to us; realizing that social sustainability was an overlooked concept that is key to our urban environments. As a result, the bench would have a space available for people to take a book, and leave a book.
